The former parish of North Fairfield was divided from Weston and became Easton in 1845. Today it is still governed by the town meeting. Until 1910 Easton was mostly a farming community with many small businesses and industries. Located near Fairfield, and only 75 minutes from New York City via Merritt Parkway, Easton is one of the most rural areas in Fairfield County. Forty percent of the town area is devoted to reservoirs and watershed, a critical element in serving the growing residential population of surrounding towns. Easton’s Parks and Recreation department offers a variety of activities for all ages including an after school and extended day program during the school year. There are several parks throughout the town offering picnic areas, nature trails, playgrounds, fishing ponds, sports, sledding and ice skating. The town also features Silverman’s Farm with an animal farm, petting zoo and farmer’s market. Easton also offers a solid education to its student population. Public schools in the area include Samuel Staples Elementary, Helen Keller Middle and Joel Barlow Regional High. In addition there is the Phoenix Academy, a private school offering grade PreK to 8^th grade.
