Monroe

Incorporated in 1823 Monroe is named after James Monroe, the fifth President of the United States. Located in eastern Fairfield County, the town has maintained growth without losing its charm. Present day Monroe covers twenty-six miles and is home to just over 20,000 residents. The town is conveniently intersected by CT Routes 25, 34, 59, 110, and 111. Located nearby are The Merritt Parkway (CT-15), Connecticut Turnpike (I-95) and Interstate 84. In nearby Bridgeport the Metro-North Commuter Railway is available and only a 75 minute ride to New York City. Monroe boasts several recreational facilities that cover almost 310 acres. These facilities, William E. Wolfe Park and Great Hollow Lake, have eight tennis courts, two basketball courts, seven ball fields, four soccer fields, football field, outdoor swimming pool, hiking trails, group picnic areas, playgrounds and a sixteen acre lake for swimming, boating and fishing. Monroe also offers a solid education to its student population. The public school system has three elementary schools, a 5-6 school, a 7-8 school and a comprehensive high school. Also offered is private Catholic school, special education for students with disabilities and a cooperative program for advanced placement of high school seniors is available through the University of Connecticut.
