Southport

By 1831 Mill River, a small hamlet, had changed its name to Southport and became a thriving commercial area with warehouses, churches, schools, stores and elegant houses. Southport became a leading coastal port on Long Island Sound and throughout the 1800’s has the only two banks in town. Today, still a part of Fairfield, much of the old village is part of the historic district, where buildings from three generations are protected for future generations. Southport is located just 50 miles northeast of New York City and 25 miles southwest of New Haven. Train rides to New York City take about 70 minutes from the Fairfield and Southport stations. Fairfield offers an abundance of leisure activities for water sport enthusiasts and sun worshippers alike, including five beaches in Southport. There are several beautifully landscaped parks offering picnicking, bicycling, walking and nature study. The town also features a Country Club, Yacht Clubs, golfing, camping and hiking facilities, athletic fields and organized sports leagues. Fairfield also offers a solid education to its student population. Public schools in the area include ten elementary schools, three middle schools, one high school and learning co-op. In addition there are several private schools plus Fairfield University and Sacred Heart University meet higher educational needs. With lots to offer Fairfield has something for everyone.
