Westport

Westport was officially incorporated as a town in 1835 with land from Fairfield, Weston and Norwalk. For several decades it was a thriving agricultural community and was known as the nation’s leading onion growing center. After the turn of the century Westport gained the reputation as an artist’s colony and cultural center. Today with its small charm Westport is no longer an artist’s colony but a thriving business center that is home to over 660 retailers and about 15 corporate headquarters. Westport covers a total area of 33.3 miles and is bordered by Norwalk on the west, Weston to the north, Fairfield to the east and Long Island Sound to the south. Two stations, located in Saugatuck and Green Farms, are on the Metro-North Railroad’s New Haven line and serve Grand Central Terminal in New York and Union Station in New Haven. Westport offers a large variety of activities ranging from the Rink @ Long Shore Club, Sailing School, YMCA, Riverwalk and several beaches. Compo Beach offers residents and visitors boardwalks, locker rooms, picnic areas, playground and a marina. Westport also offers a solid education to its student population. Public schools in the area include five elementary schools, two middle schools and one high school. Staples High School was ranked by Newsweek magazine in 2005 as 452nd on a list of the best 1,000 high schools in the country. In addition there is one private school, Greens Farm Academy, located in the 1920’s Vanderbilt estate. With lots to offer Westport has something for everyone.
